THE house of representatives has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to extend the voters registration by an extra sixty days from June 30, 2022. This is to allow eligible Nigerians to register and get there Permanent Voters’ Card and participate in the coming 2023 General elections.
The resolution was passed during the plenary session presided over by the speaker of the house, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday, June 15, following the adoption of a motion passed by Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.
Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu expressed concerns over calls from concerned citizens and civil societies urging INEC to extend the voters registration deadline to accommodate eligible voters that desire to register for their permanent voters’ card to enable them exercise their right to vote.
“The right to vote is critically important to the health and legitimacy of our democracy, as well as electoral integrity.
“If nothing is done to improve the shortage of voter registration equipment and extend the deadline for voters registration, millions of Nigerians will be disenfranchised, thus jeopardizing the integrity of the 2023 General Elections,” he said.
The motion was adopted when it was put to a voice vote by the speaker of the house Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.
The house committee on electoral matters was then directed to engage INEC and ensure that the deadline for Voters registration is extended by an extra 60 (sixty) days.
