Bishop David Oyedepo Denies Campaigning for Politicians in Nigeria, Citing Faith as Priority
During a Sunday sermon at the Living Faith Church headquarters in Ogun State, Bishop David Oyedepo refuted claims made in an audio recording released by Peoples Gazette. In the recording, former Anambra State Governor, Obi, sought Oyedepo’s help in securing votes from Christians in the South-West for the 2023 presidential election, which he described as a religious war. Oyedepo emphasized that his focus remains on faith, and he has never campaigned for any politician during any election in the country.
Daddy, I need you to speak to your people in the South-West and Kwara, the Christians in the South-West and Kwara. This is a religious war. Like I keep saying: if this works, you people will never regret the support,” he said in the audio. In his reaction, Oyedepo said he never spoke to any group of people on behalf of any politician. “Nobody had ever told me what to say in this world. No. I have never campaigned for anybody or speak on anybody’s behalf and I will not do that till I go to heaven.
He revealed that every political party in the country has sought his counsel and prayers at some point. While some have heeded his advice and seen positive results, others have disregarded his guidance and are now facing the consequences. Despite this, he remains willing to offer his wisdom to any who seek it in the future.”
Obi’s audio had faced backlash, with some of his followers alleging that it was tampered with. However, in a statement released on Sunday morning, Labour Party Presidential Campaign’s spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, confirmed the legitimacy of the audio and declared that it was misinterpreted by critics.
Earlier, Director General of Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organisation, Balogun Akin Osuntokun, Said that he had nothing to say on the matter.
“I have nothing to say on this,” Osuntokun said when contacted over the phone.
