India has surpassed China as the world’s most populous country, according to data released by the United Nations on Wednesday. As per the UN’s World Population dashboard, India’s population has reached 1.4286 billion, while China’s population stands at 1.4257 billion, as of mid-2023.
It’s worth noting that China’s population figures do not include Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, which are Special Administrative Regions of China, as per the data.
This is a significant milestone for India, as it marks the first time the country has topped the UN’s list of most populous nations since the organization began collecting population data in 1950.
China’s aging workforce and declining birth rates are posing serious demographic challenges for the country. Despite official efforts to boost birth rates in some regions, the decline has continued unabated. Meanwhile, India faces a different demographic picture, with nearly one-quarter of its population under the age of 14, according to UN data. While India has not conducted a census since 2011, around 68% of its population is in the 15 to 64 age group, with only a small percentage aged 65 and abov
