The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has recently granted approval for unified USSD codes across all mobile networks in Nigeria. The introduction of harmonized shortcodes (HSC) will ensure uniformity in the provision of mobile network services across the country. With this new development, mobile subscribers will now have access to the same customer care number, code for checking data balances, and code for credit recharge, regardless of their mobile network provider. This move is expected to enhance customers’ experiences and streamline the delivery of mobile network services in Nigeria.
The purpose of the code 996 is to verify Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration or NIN-SIM linkage. The code 2442 is used specifically for managing Do-Not-Disturb (DND) unsolicited messaging complaints. The code 3232 is commonly used for porting services, also known as Mobile Number Portability.
The old and new short codes that have been harmonized will operate simultaneously until May 17, 2023, by which time it is expected that all networks will have completed the full migration to the new codes.
