On Friday, a court in the UK pronounced its verdict against Ike Ekweremadu, the former deputy senate president, along with his wife Beatrice and medical doctor Obinna Obeta. The three were convicted for their involvement in a heinous crime of plotting to harvest a man’s kidney for the sake of Ekweremadu’s ailing daughter. The court sentenced Ekweremadu to nine years and eight months in prison, while his wife Beatrice was given a sentence of four years and six months. The medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, was handed a severe punishment of ten years in prison for the same offence.
Ekweremadu, Beatrice, and Obeta were found guilty of conspiring to facilitate the travel of a Nigerian youth named David Nwamini to the United Kingdom for the purpose of exploiting him for his kidney. The kidney was required for Ekweremadu’s daughter, Sonia, who was ill.
The trial, which spanned six weeks, is expected to result in a conviction at the Old Bailey, London’s Central Criminal Court, today. During the trial, prosecutor Hugh Davies accused Ekweremadu of displaying “entitlement, dishonesty, and hypocrisy” in his behavior.
