Introduction
Nigerian weddings typically involve multiple ceremonies spread over several days or even weeks. These events can be divided into two main categories: the traditional engagement ceremony (also known as “Introduction” or “Knocking”), which takes place before the white wedding; and the church/registry wedding followed by a reception party.
Traditional Engagement Ceremony
The traditional engagement ceremony is usually hosted by the bride’s family at their home or village square. The groom brings his family along with gifts such as kola nuts (a symbol of hospitality), wine, palm oil, money etc., to formally ask for her hand in marriage from her parents.
Once they arrive at her home/family compound, there is usually a formal introduction between both families conducted by elders from each side who exchange pleasantries regarding each other’s history/clan background before any discussion about dowry payment is started.
After this stage has been concluded satisfactorily both families then go ahead with discussing dowry payment which could include cash payments/gifts-in-kind like livestock/cars/houses etc., depending on ethnic group/customary law.
This process usually involves negotiation between both sides until an agreement is reached on how much should be paid for bride price/dowry.
In addition it’s also customary for both parties during negotiations to entertain themselves through cultural dances/music performances showcasing their respective cultures/traditions while guests enjoy food/drinks served throughout proceedings till late hours of night when event ends officially.
Church/Registry Wedding
The church or registry wedding is the formal legal union of the couple in Nigeria. It usually takes place after the traditional engagement ceremony and can be a low-key event with only close family members and friends present.
During a typical Nigerian church/registry wedding, there are several rituals that take place including exchanging of vows, rings, holy communion etc., depending on religious denomination. After this stage has been concluded satisfactorily both families then go ahead to sign marriage certificate/legal documents making it official before proceeding to reception party venue for celebration.
Reception Party
The reception party is where Nigerians really let loose and have fun celebrating their newlyweds.
It’s typically held at an outdoor or indoor event center chosen by couples which could range from modest venues like community centers/halls to more luxurious places like 5-star hotels/banquet halls/marquees depending on budget/preference.
There’s usually lots of music (live band/DJ), dancing, food (local/Nigerian cuisine) drinks (alcoholic/non-alcoholic) served throughout proceedings until late hours when guests depart home/take lodging in nearby hotels if necessary.
