Some leaders of the hausa community in lagos state have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to remove the ban on okada operations in 6 Local government areas of the state.
The leaders pointed out that majority of the okada riders are from the Northern part of Nigeria and therefore have a huge voting population and they contribute to votes during elections.
On Wednesday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu placed a ban on okada riders which is to take effect from June 1, 2022 in 6 local government areas: Ikeja, Surulere, Lagos Island, Apapa, Eti-Osa and Lagos Mainland.
This was after the lynching and burning of David Imoh a sound engineer by Okada riders over a disagreement of N100.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said, “We will not sit back and watch criminally-minded people use that mode of transportation to perpetrate crimes and criminality in Lagos. Lives are being lost on daily basis, preventable accidents are happening every day and the riders are not respecting any of our traffic laws.”
He added: “The situation has led to a complete breakdown of law and order. This ban has come to stay and we will not tolerate any weakness in enforcement.”
Some hausa leaders has pleaded with the Governor to rethink the ban and allow okada members continue with their operations, claiming that their voting population in Lagos is over 2.7million.
The Seriki of Obalende, Saliu Waziri, told punch that instead of placing a ban on okada riders, the government should get the data of okada riders in lagos, investigate and fish out the criminals.
