Regardless of Lucky Irabor, Chief of Defence Staff reservation, Zamfara State Governor has insisted that there’s no going back on his decision for residents of the State to acquire firearms and defend themselves against Bandits.
The Governor has gone ahead in a bid to counter banditry and restore peace in the State to inaugurate four committees on security matters and also made provision for 20 brand new Hikux Vehicles and 1500 motor bikes for the commencement of operations.
The newly inaugurated committees are, Intelligence Gathering on Banditry, Community Protection Guards (CPG), Prosecution of Bandutry-Related Offences and State Security Standing panel.
The Governor made it clear that the committees were established as part of his administration’s effort to address banditry and insecurity in the State.
He added that members of the committee were selected based on their track records of performance and showed confidence that they would sincerely carry out their mandates to achieve the goals.
Making a reference to Irabor’s opposition to his directive, saying his government was under oath to protect its citizens, “We will do everything possible to uphold this responsibility within the armbit of the law”.
“We are aware of misgivings expressed in some quarters regarding the new measures, particularly the decision to encourage members of the communities suffering almost daily from the inhumane aggressions of the bandits to acquire firearms to defend their communities,” the governor said in a statement by his Press Secretary, Jamilu Magaji.
He assured that “the acquisition and usage of firearms by members of the general public who desire to do so would be governed by the Nigeria Firearms Act.”
