The initial toll stands at over 3,400, but is rapidly increasing since the first earthquake hit on Monday morning. A second powerful tremor hit further north about 12 hours later. Rescuers are searching through rubble in freezing and snowy conditions to find survivors, with many countries sending support including specialist teams, sniffer dogs, and equipment.
The WHO warned that snowy conditions will leave many people without shelter and increase dangers. The earthquake was powerful enough to be felt in Cyprus, Lebanon, and Israel. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for an international response to the crisis.: WHO warns of potential 8x increase in death toll from Turkey earthquake.
